No matter how deeply we feel that we are "the apex predator", that we're unstoppable or that we are incapable of error. Thinking along those lines will ultimately bring about our own destruction.
Andrew was the perfect example of this in the movie.
After going to a party that his cousin Matt drags him to he makes a new friend, Steve Montgomery. They go down into the hole and they are quickly encapsulated by a crystal looking rock that they find down there which creates very loud high pitched whirring sounds. Soon after this they discover that the rock has given Andrew, Steve and Matt telekinetic abilities. Bonded by these powers Andrew goes from having no friends to having a new friend + his cousin and they all have these incredible powers.
They all become very close and go on some adventures exercising their new powers.
After using his powers to win the school talent show as a magic act he gets wasted at the after party. When he goes into the bedroom with the cute "pink haired girl" as Steve called her, he throws up on her because he is so damn drunk causing him to feel severely embarrassed.
When a kid at school makes fun of him for puking on Monica (the cute pink haired girl) Andrew uses his powers to rip the kids teeth out. After that he declares himself an apex predator.
Andrew who is still getting physically beaten by his father at home while is
mother is dying flies up to the top of a building and begins to cry.
Steve later flies up there too because he knows Andrew is in trouble due to a
nosebleed that they get whenever someone else is in trouble along with hearing their voice. Seeing that
Andrew is upset, he tries to comfort and help Andrew. Andrew, feeling
depressed, angry, alone and mistreated tells him to go away. When he
doesn't, Andrew causes lightning to strike and kill Steve. So, he goes from having no friends, to having a new friend (that helps him almost get laid), to killing his new best friend.
He tries to use his powers to rob people in order to try to buy his dying mother's medication, but winds up putting himself in the hospital after trying to rob a convenience store by using his telekinetic power to pull the gun from the clerks hand (who was trying to protect the store) causing the gun to go off, shooting the gas pump which then explodes leaving Andrew severely burned.
Later at the hospital his Father shows up and tells him that his mother is dead. When his Father tells him that it's all his fault because he left the house, causing him to have to go out looking for him Andrew tries to kill his father, but Matt saves Andrew's father because he had already driven there due to a nosebleed which let him know that Andrew was hurt when Andrew tried to rob the convenience store.
Andrew then becomes enraged at Matt for saving his father when he tried to kill him. While he was stronger than Matt he was still killed by him because Andrew chose evil via the overwhelming anger he felt inside...
Because in the end Matt HAD to kill him since Andrew was attempting to destroy the city. That is the exact reason for Andrews demise, he was so focused on destroying the city that Matt was able to kill him in order to save the citizens of the city and also put Andrew out of his misery.
So in the end he wasn't the apex predator...
